"Drinking in Dublin is no longer a case of finding the nearest boozer and downing as many bevvies as you can cram in before closing time. In these affluent times, imbibing in the nation's cosmopolitan capital has become something of a lifestyle experience. The profusion of lavishly-adorned designer pubs packed with hip and happening people has transformed the pub scene inexorably and drinkers now have more choice than ever in which to see and be seen.

The Long Stone, situated on Townsend Street, is one such pub, albeit with a difference. Located on the site of a "standing Stone", used by the vikings to mark one of the first landing points in Dublin, the premises pays homage to its rich history by meticulous attention to design and layout. Replete with comfortable nooks and crannies under an impressive timber structure, The Long Stone combines the best of Victorian design with more modern, eclectic features.

The clientele at The Long Stone ranges from the business community, to the early evening pre-cinema, pre club crowd and the regular patrons, who choose to spend their evening out at the pub. The proximity of Trinity College has made it an ideal haunt for discerning students while its location, a stone's throw from the Temple Bar area, makes it an ideal starting point for a great night out."

"OH! sighed the partner when she entered the Long Stone Bar, I could move my bed in there - it made the point that when Winter comes in hard and cold a cosy venue is what counts most. Posh hotels are nice for swanning about and out of town haunts are fine for lazy summer days, but when bitter winds are blowing a snug bar is the perfect venue.

So mellowed by the heat and the convivial atmosphere we addressed the business at hand, the cuisine. Here we had the pleasure of lunch and the added one of draught beverages. For many diners these twin pleasures and the homely environment make a bar/restaurant the perfect place.

Throughout we were entertained with the history of The Long Stone. We learned that it served sailors in days of yore situated as it is in Townsend Street - the last premises at the end of the Old Dublin Waterfront. Now so changed.

The Long Stone is a well run premises. It's cuisine is tailor made (after a little in-house marketing) to the needs of the local community, but the warm welcome is there for all travellers in need of sustenance.

At last it dawned on the chum that the governor did not supply mattresses or cater for over-night guests. She roused herself with great effort and we made a reluctant exit after the most extended lunch in history. That speaks for itself."

"You'll have to go along way to find a friendlier, and indeed, more happening drinkerie than The Long Stone which is just a five minute stroll away from Grafton St. Along with the superb atmosphere, there's regular live music and a stunning fireplace to gawp at. Recommended."

Evening Herald

"The Long Stone, Townsend Street is highly recommended. This lively venue serves great beer and offers plenty of choice in both sexes!"

"The Long Stone, Townsend Street. Old books and hand carved bannisters lend a rustic and medieval feel. Lots of interesting rooms: the largest has a carving of a bearded man whose mouth serves as a fireplace."
